Equine Herpes Myeloencephalitis Cases in Erie County!!

NY Ag and Markets informed us today that there have been three confirmed cases of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalitis (neurologic Herpes) on a farm in Erie County. At this time the farm is under quarantine and we have not been made aware of any horses that have come on or off the premise recently.

Please be mindful of biosecurity as you travel on and off farms with or without your horses! Taking temperatures twice daily on all horses that travel off farm or interact with non-resident horses is recommended. An increase in body temperature is the first sign of Equine Herpes Virus infection.

Please call 585-243-5560 if you have any questions about your horse's health or potential exposure.

New USEF Microchip Rule for USHJA

Do you show in USHJA Hunter, Jumper or Equitation shows? USEF recently passed a rule requiring all USHJA registered horses to be microchipped by December 1st, 2017.

While this is still two years off, having your horse scanned and microchipped is an easy one time procedure that can be performed at the same time as routine vaccinations, floats, or bloodwork appointments.

New USEF Equine Vaccination Rule begins December 1st!

Don't forget about the new vaccination rule for horses entering the grounds of an USEF sanctioned show/event beginning December 1st.

Routine Influenza/Rhinopneumonitis vaccination is an important part of your horse's immunization program!

Tick Testing!

We have been receiving many reports of owners finding ticks on their horses (and other pets) in the past month.

We wanted to share with you a wonderful resource from the University of Massachusetts that will identify the type of tick and test for the presence of common tick borne diseases. This allows us to identify horses that need testing and/or treatment sooner rather than later and provides peace of mind.

Tick Borne Disease Network - Tick Report

Owners can submit ticks themselves following the very straight forward instructions or we are happy to submit the tick for you, and can always assist in understanding the results of the report.

For more information on common tick borne diseases in horses check out our Advice from the Vets blog post about Lyme Disease!
