Imaging

Henderon Equine Clinic is equipped with ultrasound, computed radiography and endoscopy.  All of these imaging modalities can be used at your farm or boarding location, or at the clinic.  Read more about each of these imaging techniques below:

Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create a picture of soft-tissue structures.  We can use our ultrasound machine rectally to image the uterus of a mare, which is helpful for identifying or assessing the health of a pregnancy.  We can also use it to image tendons and ligaments of the limbs, to identify strains or "bows".  We can also use the same probe to get a good picture of the surface of the lungs, and the outer area of the abdomen.  This can help us diagnose pneumonia or even colic in some cases.

Computed Radiography

Computed Radiography (CR) is a form of "digital" radiography, in the sense that it creates a digital picture that can be manipulated and saved in digital form.  Our CR machine includes a stall-side processor, which allows us to take an image of your horse at your farm, and have the information within minutes. 

Endoscopy

We are equipped with a 1 meter endoscope, which is ideal for upper airway imaging.  Endoscopy is the use of a flexible, fiberoptic camera that can be passed into a cavity to allow visualization of the structures within.  When the camera is used in the upper airway, we pass the endoscope up the nostril, through the nasal passage and to "nasopharynx" which is the air-filled cavity just before the larynx.  Here, we can document the movement of the larynx (to check for "roaring" or decreased movement of one or both sides of the larynx), the position of the epiglottis, and the general health of this region.  Additionally, we can pass the scope into the gutteral pouches, which are normally air-filled structures on either side of the nasopharynx.  The gutteral pouches are home to several very important structures such as cranial nerves and arteries, and can become damaged or infected.
